For the National Certified Guardian (NCG) Exam

NCG Certification vs. State Guardian Licensing: Which Do You Need?

The NCG is a national voluntary credential. State guardian licenses (where they exist) are legal requirements. They are not the same — and not mutually exclusive. Here's how to know which one applies to you.

The NCG — National Voluntary Credential

The National Certified Guardian (NCG) credential is issued by the Center for Guardianship Certification (CGC), a nonprofit body of the National Guardianship Association. It is voluntary — no state requires it by law. But it is the primary way professional guardians demonstrate national-standard competency, and courts increasingly expect it.

Who benefits most: Professional guardians in states that do not have their own guardian licensing requirements.

State Guardian Licenses — State-Specific Requirements

A small number of states have enacted guardian licensing or certification requirements. These are issued by state regulatory bodies and are legally required to practice in those states. They operate independently of the NCG.

Who this affects: Professional guardians in states with licensing requirements must meet those requirements regardless of NCG status.

A Note for California Professionals

California Licensed Professional Fiduciaries (CLPFs) who pass the CA Professional Fiduciary Exam receive the NCG credential as part of that process. If you are a CA fiduciary, you already hold the NCG-equivalent credential — you do not need to separately take the NCG exam.

NCG Exam Prep is built for professional guardians outside California, or individuals seeking the NCG credential independently.

The Bottom Line

For most professional guardians outside California — particularly those in states without licensing — the NCG is the national credential that establishes professional standing and signals competency to courts, families, and oversight bodies. The exam is based on the NGA Standards of Practice, the authoritative framework for ethical guardianship nationwide.
